Repossession vs. Asset Location: What's the Difference?

By James Cassaday, Licensed Private Investigator ·

Not every asset recovery situation calls for a physical repossession. Sometimes a creditor, attorney, or private party needs to know where an asset is — not necessarily to take it right now. Understanding the distinction between locate-only and full repossession services helps you choose the right engagement for your situation.

What Asset Location Includes

An asset location assignment focuses entirely on determining where a piece of collateral currently is. The deliverable is a written report — usually with GPS-confirmed address, supporting investigative findings, and photographs of the asset at the location. No physical recovery is attempted.

Asset location is appropriate when:

  • You need to confirm collateral exists and can be found before initiating legal proceedings
  • Your attorney needs documentation of the asset's location for a court filing or replevin motion
  • The collateral is in a location where self-help repossession is not immediately feasible (e.g., a locked garage) and you need the address to pursue a court order
  • You're a judgment creditor who needs to locate titled assets before seeking a court order to seize them
  • You need to confirm a vehicle's location before sending a demand letter to a borrower

What Full Repossession Includes

A full repossession assignment includes both the investigative location work and the physical recovery of the asset. This is appropriate when:

  • Default is clear and documented, and the creditor is ready to proceed with recovery
  • The asset is likely accessible — parked in a public street, driveway, or open parking lot
  • You want a single agency handling the entire assignment under one documentation chain

When to Use Each

If there's any question about the legal right to repossess, or the asset is in a location that may require a court order to access, start with a locate-only assignment. Your attorney can advise on whether self-help repossession is appropriate once the asset's location is confirmed. If you have clear documentation of default and the asset is likely accessible, a full recovery assignment saves time.

Faithful Path Investigations handles both. We'll advise you on which makes sense for your specific situation when you contact us.
